About Ankle Arthritis

As you get older it is not unusual to feel pain and stiffness in your ankles and feet. This pain and stiffness in your ankles can often be caused by ankle arthritis.

Ankle arthritis does not simply go away by itself and needs to be treated. If left untreated will get worse and over time become a nagging intense pain that is so uncomfortable that you can no longer walk even short distances.

Even relatively mild to moderate ankle arthritis can seriously impact your ability to play sports and limit your mobility and quality of life. However, with proper treatment you can slow the progression of ankle arthritis and heal damaged tissue so that it is possible to continue and even return to a more fit, active and productive lifestyle.

Non-Surgical Treatment for Ankle Arthritis

Depending on the specific cause of your ankle arthritis it is often possible to manage it with a combination of medications, activity modification, custom shoes, inserts and braces to alter the mechanics of the ankle and provide better support, weight loss and physical therapy. Oral medications, topical crèmes and applying ice to your ankles to reduce inflammation may be helpful. For some patients, steroid injections may have some value as well.

Surgical Treatment for Ankle Arthritis

If the pain, stiffness and swelling from your ankle arthritis causes ongoing pain or disability and is not relieved with nonsurgical treatment, your doctor may recommend an MRI prior to considering surgery. Surgical options would include corrective surgery for ankle/foot deformities, ligamentous repair, and, in cases of severe osteoarthritis, ankle fusion or joint replacement.
